SAN JOSE - Thousands of people gathered to remember a San Jose police officer who died when his police motorcycle collided with a minivan.

KPIX-TV reports (http://cbsloc.al/28TB5YS) that nearly 4,000 people attended a memorial service honoring 34-year-old officer Michael Katherman at SAP Center in downtown San Jose. Katherman was hit and killed by the minivan on June 14.

The minivan hit Katherman as it was making a left turn. Police say the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Uniformed officers and personnel from law enforcement agencies across the state joined Katherman's family, friends and coworkers at the two-hour ceremony Tuesday.

Katherman was an 11-year veteran of the department. He leaves behind a wife, two sons, his parents and an older brother.
