Grass fire in Vallejo burns 'multiple' homes

VALLEJO — The Latest on wildfires in California (all times local):

Firefighters in the San Francisco Bay Area have reported that "multiple" homes are burning and others are at risk as they battle a 4-alarm grass fire in Vallejo.

The Vallejo Fire Department says on its Twitter page the blaze off Interstate 80 near the Carquinez Bridge has led to the closure of all eastbound lanes of the busy interstate.

KCBS-TV quoted fire officials as saying the blaze was one of three vegetation fires burning simultaneously in the area.

Vallejo firefighters tweeted that the department's resources were "depleted" and multiple agencies were heading in to help. It did not specify how many homes were burning.

The Vallejo fire department did not immediately respond to a call for more details.

Crews working in rugged terrain during a punishing heat wave are having a tough time building containment of a wildfire that's burned nearly 2.5 square miles (6.5 square km) in the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles.

More than 1,200 firefighters are on the line Thursday, aided by a fleet of water- and fire retardant-dropping aircraft. The blaze has been at just 10 percent containment for several days. No structures are threatened.

Investigators from the U.S. Forest Service are asking for help from the public in determining the cause of the fire sparked Monday near the Pacific Crest Trail.

To the north, a wildfire that briefly shut down a highway near Bakersfield was 50 percent contained Wednesday after burning about 2.3 square miles (5.9 kilometers) of dry brush.
