A Tuesday afternoon crash on Highway 128 west of the rural community of Navarro closed the Mendocino County highway for 90 minutes and sent two drivers to hospitals.

At about 2:15 p.m., the drivers were approaching each other on a curve when a Dodge driven by William Johnson, 54, of Mendocino drifted across double yellow lines, according to the CHP. It smashed into the front of a Ford driven by Aurens Gilmore, 48, of Hopland.

The vehicles blocked the two-lane highway, and firefighters had to free Johnson from the wreckage.

Johnson suffered major injuries and was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Gilmore had minor injuries and was taken to Ukiah Valley Medical Center, the CHP said.
