SAN FRANCISCO — Efforts to remove federally protected birds from the old eastern span of the Bay Bridge could cost the state millions of dollars.

The San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/10ehXPU) reports that bridge officials are trying to move double-crested cormorants and other birds so they can demolish the 10,000-foot-long steel structure.

Officials have built nesting "condos" on the underside of the new eastern span and tried to lure them with bird decoys, cormorant recordings and nests made from discarded Christmas wreaths. They have also installed nets over part of the old span to keep birds away.

But the newspaper reports the birds haven't budged and more are arriving to roost on the old bridge.

Regional transportation officials estimate it could cost an additional $17.1 million to move the birds.
