A 22-year-old Lakeport man was found trapped in an overturned pickup in what Lakeport police are investigating as a possible DUI crash.
Callers reported the sound of a crash and someone screaming at about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday near Lakeport Unified School District, Chief Brad Rasmussen said.
Officers found a 1992 Ford F150 pickup on its roof just off Lakeshore Boulevard north of Lange Street, police said.
The driver, Damon Thomas Wooldridge, was trapped inside and it took firefighters about an hour to free him, Rasmussen said. He was taken to Sutter Lakeside Hospital and then flown by helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
The injuries were serious but did not appear life-threatening, the police chief said.
Officers suspect Wooldridge was driving north on the boulevard at a “high rate of speed” and lost control of the pickup, Rasmussen said. The pickup then hit the western curb, flipped sideways, went airborne and crashed into a large oak tree before coming to rest on its roof.
The Santa Rosa Police Department assisted Lakeport police by arranging for a legal blood-alcohol test at the hospital.
