Man suspected of fleeing Santa Rosa crash arrested

A Windsor man suspected of slamming a sports car into a minivan on Brush Creek Road on Tuesday and then fleeing on foot, turned himself into police, Santa Rosa Sgt. Mike Lazzarini confirmed late Wednesday night.

Ryan Rummonds, 38, of Windsor was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail on Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of felony hit and run, but by 10 p.m. he had made bail, according to jail records.

Police said Rummonds was behind the wheel of a Dodge Viper that collided with a Honda minivan and that he ran before police arrived. Witnesses said the Viper, which was royal blue with two white racing stripes, was driving fast in the moments before the crash, which sent the sports car’s passenger and the driver of the minivan to the hospital.

James Randolph was heading home from work on his bicycle along Badger Road when he heard the impact.

“It was a big loud noise,” he said. “Sounded like a bunch of metal trash cans slamming together.”

Randolph said he attempted to help the injured, including the driver of the minivan who had been pushed into her back seat from the impact of the collision. He said he laid his bike down, but the Viper’s passenger, who he described as “dazed” grabbed his bike and tried to ride away on it.

“I yelled, ‘Hey, that’s my bike,’?” he said. “One of the cops grabbed him.”

The man was taken by ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with what police described as serious injuries.

The Viper was traveling north near Badger Road when he collided with a southbound minivan, Lazzarini said.

The accident, just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, drew scores of onlookers, many residents from the surrounding neighborhood. Witnesses said they saw skid marks behind the Viper that seemed to indicate it had swerved into the oncoming lane before striking the minivan.

Santa Rosa police said they did not know if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the wreck, nor have they said if a determination had been made as to which driver was responsible. As of late Wednesday, they had not identified the victims or released updates on their condition.
