Man suspected in string of east Santa Rosa residential crimes

The 911 caller early Tuesday reported a man, wearing only boxer shorts, attempting to steal a Hummer SUV from a Santa Rosa driveway.

The man gave up on the Hummer when it wouldn't start and police officers found him a few blocks from the Sunrise Avenue vehicle, said Sgt. Mike Lazzarini.

Detectives have been trying to trace suspect Matthew Thomas Bauer's recent path. They now suspect him of burglarizing a home Monday morning, stealing an SUV Monday night and attempting to steal the Hummer, said Lazzarini.

All of the incidents occurred in the east Santa Rosa area between Bryden Lane and Brush Creek Road, between about 7:30 a.m. Monday and 6:25 a.m. Tuesday.

During the Tuesday call to police, the resident said he could see his Hummer in the driveway and a man sitting in it, trying to get it started, Lazzarini said.

As the suspect ran from the property, the caller told police the man appeared to be scantily clad.

Bauer is believed to be a transient and Lazzarini said drugs could be involved.
