Authorities have identified the man killed earlier this week in a suspected hit-and-run crash on a rural Mendocino County highway.

Stuart May, 66, of Covelo, was found around 6 p.m. Monday by a Round Valley Tribal Police officer, who spotted a damaged bicycle along Mendocino Pass Road, also known as Highway 162, northeast of Covelo, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said. The officer stopped to investigate and discovered May’s body near Short Creek Road.

Mendocino County investigators believe May had been living in the Covelo area for a year or more. However, they haven’t been able to find his home address, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday.

Authorities asked anyone with information about May or the crash to call the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Communications Center at 707-463-4086, or the Coroner’s Division at 707-463-4421.
