A second suspect in a brutal Santa Rosa gang-related beating 10 days ago was arrested Friday.

Santa Rosa police arrested Marcos Dionicio Vazquez, 19, of Santa Rosa on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the May 20 assault in a room at the Motel 6 on Cleveland Avenue.

Eight to 10 people reportedly took part in kicking and punching the victim in the head, leaving him with broken bones and internal injuries so severe he was placed in a medically induced coma, according to police.

The day of the attack, a first suspect, Maurice Michael Marchbanks, 25, was arrested at his Sixth Street residence. He was booked into Sonoma County Jail on charges of attempted murder.

Subsequent investigation led to the apprehension of Vazquez, who was taken into custody while leaving the Sonoma County courthouse, where he had appeared on unrelated pending criminal matters, according to Sgt. John Cregan.

Both men are being held in jail in lieu of more than $1 million in bail.

The victim, whose name was withheld, had gang ties, police said. He was partying with friends when rival gang members in an adjoining room isolated and confronted him before attacking him.

A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
