A man walking late Monday night along Highway 12 near Brush Creek Road was hit by a car and seriously injured, according to Santa Rosa police.

The man, who was not carrying identification and has not been identified, suffered what appeared to be severe head injuries, traffic Sgt. Mike Numainville said Tuesday. The man was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Driver Benjamin Harold Scott, 53, of Sonoma called 911 to report the crash and has cooperated with the investigation, Numainville said.

The collision occurred in the westbound lanes in the “S” curves east of Farmers Lane. It didn’t appear the man had been trying to cross the lanes but was most likely on the side of the road. Officers are trying to determine whether he was in the roadway or on the shoulder, Numainville said.

The investigation closed the westbound lanes between Brush Creek Road and Farmers Lane for more than six hours, reopening at 5:10 a.m.

The sergeant asked anyone with information about the collision to call traffic Officer Jeff Woods at 543-3636.
