Crews stop fuel spill at Bodega Bay gas station

A malfunctioning pump at a Bodega Bay gas station spilled an estimated 25 gallons of fuel that made its way into a storm drain and under the road toward the harbor before it was intercepted Sunday.

Bodega Bay fire crews stopped the forward movement of the flow, emergency dispatchers said. Fish and Game and Sonoma County hazmat personnel were also called to the scene.

Bodega Bay Fire Capt. Justin Fox said none of the gasoline reached the harbor.

The incident began about 9:10 a.m. when a pump at the 76 station across Highway 1 from the Tides Wharf wouldn’t shut off, spilling fuel that spread across the parking lot and into the storm drain before the entire pumping system was turned off, dispatchers and a gas station employee said.

Fox said the station was planning to hire a private company to pump out the spilled gas and finish the cleanup.
