Spare the Air Day in effect

A Spare the Air alert is in effect for Wednesday, and air quality officials urge Bay Area motorists to stay off the roads as much as possible because of hot temperatures and atmospheric conditions likely to trap smog close to the ground.

It's the second consecutive Spare the Air Day and the second of the summer season so far, driven by temperatures forecast to reach into the 90s around the region.

People with respiratory or heart conditions, as well as the very young and elderly, are encouraged to avoid outdoor physical activity outside of the cool, early morning hours.

Air conditions in the east and south Bay Area regions are forecast to be particularly bad.

Residents can help by finding alternatives to driving combustion vehicles in whatever way possible, as well as refraining from using gas-powered leaf blowers and lawnmowers, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said.

The air district also urges people in the region to limit overall use of electricity and to avoid using aerosol products, charcoal barbecues and lighter fluid.
