Sonoma County fire agencies Sunday scrambled to extinguish a series of small fires, some of them related to the cold weather.

Santa Rosa firefighters responded to smoke in an attic in the 700 block of Brittain Lane in west Santa Rosa. The fire began shortly before 1:30 p.m. Sunday after the home’s occupants turned on an electric heater that soon overloaded the wiring and caused a short in the attic, Battalion Chief Jack Piccinini said.

The damage likely amounted to less than $500, he said.

About the same time, a small explosion erupted inside a trucking shop in the 100 block of Scenic Avenue south of Santa Rosa. The 1:34 p.m. fire began when gasoline fumes from an open container were ignited by the flame of a water heater, said Central Fire Battalion Chief David Cornelssen.

Workers there battled the flames, which were soon doused by Rincon Valley firefighters. Fire crews also responded from Santa Rosa, Cal Fire, Rohnert Park and Rancho Adobe.

Shortly after 5 p.m., Geyserville firefighters were called to a vegetation fire near a structure in the 13700 block of Chalk Hill Road east of Healdsburg. The fire burned about half an acre.

Also on Sunday, firefighters responded to a small fire from a heater on North Street in Santa Rosa and a reported chimney fire in the 10200 block of Brooks Road near Windsor. It turned out the chimney’s damper hadn’t been opened, Cornelssen said.
