The power blackout Wednesday at Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa Medical Center was caused by an equipment failure in the hospital’s 21,000-volt power system, Kaiser and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. officials said Thursday.

The power interruption at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday affected nearly 2,000 customers in northeast Santa Rosa, including the Kaiser complex on Bicentennial Way. Power was restored to most customers by 4 p.m., while the Kaiser facility continued operating with power from its own emergency generators, officials said.

A lengthy investigation found that two insulators on Kaiser’s system had failed. PG&E crews worked with Kaiser personnel to make the repairs. Power was restored at Kaiser by 2:45 a.m. Thursday.
