Power outage hits thousands in Petaluma

A large power outage centered in east Petaluma early Monday knocked out electricity to 4,900 customers, according to Pacific Gas & Electric Co.

Power company troubleshooters looking for the cause found two spots in the system failed. The problems, which occurred almost simulaneously, involved an overhead wire on South Ely Boulevard west of Casa Grande Road and an underground line along Rainier Avenue, said PG&E spokeswoman Deanna Contreras. But what led to the equipment issues remained under investigation.

“Some customers heard loud noises and reported seeing some explosions,” Contreras said.

The initial 5:24 a.m. outage involved 3,500 customers. In fixing and assessing that issue, crews briefly pulled the plug on about 1,400 more customers.

The initial outage was fixed by 7:15 a.m. and the last 11 customers still without power late Monday morning were restored later in the day.
