A Standing Rock Sioux tribe member is scheduled to speak Monday at Santa Rosa Junior College about the Dakota Access Pipeline protest and environmental justice issues.

Chase Iron Eyes, an activist and attorney for the Lakota People's Law Project, will discuss water protection and the large, diverse campaign by tribes and allies to halt the North Dakota project. The last segment was recently completed by the pipeline developer after President Donald Trump signed an executive order that reversed the opposition stance taken by the federal government under President Barack Obama.

Monday's free lecture will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Bertolini Student Center.

College officials said the event will provide a look into the current struggles of Native Americans. Iron Eyes, a former candidate for Congress in North Dakota, was on the front line of the protesting against the pipeline, according to Lakota People's Law Project.

The event, sponsored by the SRJC Native American Student Council and the Student Equity Office, is open to the public. Parking permits are required. Daily permits are available on campus lots for $4.
