Two motorcycle fatalities in Napa County over weekend

Two motorcycle riders died in Napa County over the weekend in separate motorcycle crashes after both crossed into the opposing lane and collided with vehicles, according to the California Highway Patrol.

There were five motorcycle crashes total in the county between Friday and Sunday, said CHP Officer Marc Renspurger Monday.

Kristoffer Gelsthorpe, 31, of Fairfield, died Sunday after crashing into another vehicle near Lake Berryessa. Gelsthorpe was headed west about 12:20 p.m. on Highway 128 when he crossed double yellow lines on a curve and his Aprilia Bicilindrico struck a Honda pickup truck driven by Cecelia Short, 65, of Napa. Short and a 67-year-old passenger weren't injured, the CHP said.

Gelsthorpe was taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa and pronounced dead.

Friday night about 6:50 p.m., a 34-year-old San Francisco woman was riding up Highway 29 out of the Napa Valley on a Suzuki SV650. Elizabeth Holly was going about 55 mph near Old Lawley Toll Road when she lost traction on a curve and slid into the oncoming lane and collided with a Dodge pickup, according to the CHP.

Pickup driver Duane Whitten, 49, of Lower Lake, tried to swerve out of the way but couldn't avoid the bike, the CHP said. Holly died in the crash. Whitten wasn't injured.
