Two boats collided on Lake Mendocino Saturday night, killing one man and injuring four others, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Miguel Corona, 26, of Ukiah, died at the lake, officials said.

Witnesses told deputies one boat was leaving the north boat ramp as another was arriving when they crashed about 10:20 p.m. One boat was carrying up to seven people; the other had three people on board, sheriff’s officials said.

The boats were a 2002 Malibu Wakesetter and a 1982 Century Cuddy Cabin, each 23 feet long, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s officials continue to investigate along with the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit into the role alcohol, speed and darkness may have played in causing the accident.

They also are investigating whether the driver of one boat fled the scene, as initially reported.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 707-463-4086.
