North Bay firefighters responded Saturday to a brush fire in a field off Highway 37 near the Petaluma River.

Highway motorists reported seeing smoke and flames in a flurry of 911 calls that started about 3:40 p.m., dispatchers said.

About a quarter-acre of grassland was burning when firefighters arrived. Strong winds swept the smoke away from the roadway.

Novato, Cal Fire, Lakeville, Wilmar, Schell-Vista fire crews responded to the scene and kept the fire from spreading.
