The man who died after leading deputies on a chase from Covelo to Willits and crashing into a tree off Highway 101 was identified as Tomas Pitagoras Gouverneur, 32.

Gouverneur, who has addresses in San Francisco and Oregon, was a "person of interest" in violent encounters that left two people dead and two wounded Sunday in Kettenpom, a remote Trinity County village north of the Mendocino County border. Two hours after the crimes were reported Sunday, Mendocino County sheriff's deputies spotted the Subaru Gouverneur was driving outside of Covelo and tried to pull him over, officials said.

Gouverneur sped away, launching a 40-mile pursuit at speeds reaching 90 mph, Mendocino County Sheriff's Capt. Kurt Smallcomb said.

He lost control of the car as he tried to pass another vehicle and crashed into a tree, Smallcomb said.
