A morning traffic stop for suspected speeding led to other problems Thursday for a Petaluma couple who were allegedly transporting their two children without seat belts.
Manuel Chan-Euan, 30, was arrested after Petaluma police learned he was wanted on four no-bail warrants for charges that included driving under the influence and misdemeanor hit and run. Chan-Euan was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on the warrants and also on suspicion of driving with a suspended license, according to a police press release.
His wife, Rosario Chantu, 32, a passenger, was cited for being a parent in a vehicle with unsecured children.
Petaluma Police Officer Paul Accornero spotted Chan-Euan’s Chrysler Pacifica van shortly after 8:10 a.m. in a posted 25 mph school zone on Ely Boulevard in front of Casa Grande High School. The officer used a laser speed detection device to record the vehicle traveling at 44 mph.
After Accornero stopped the van, he noticed the couple’s 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son weren’t wearing seat belts.
