A Cardinal Newman graduate who was stranded on St. Martin after Hurricane Irma pummeled the island was evacuated Saturday to Puerto Rico.

Matthew Popovich, 28, was on a Labor Day vacation from his home in Washington, D.C., with his girlfriend when it became clear they would not be able to escape before the Category 5 hurricane hit. The two were among an estimated 6,000 U.S. citizens stranded on the island. On Saturday morning, they were airlifted by a U.S. military plane to Puerto Rico, according to Popovich’s Twitter account.
