Program aimed at preparing students for construction careers expands as the North Bay rebuilds after the fires

High school seniors have until Nov. 29 to apply for the North Bay Construction Corps.|

The North Bay Construction Corps, a program aimed at preparing high school seniors for careers in construction, will expand next year as the community begins rebuilding after last month’s devastating wildfires.

The Santa Rosa-based Career Technical Education Foundation launched the five-month training program earlier this year in collaboration with the North Coast Builders Exchange and Sonoma County Office of Education. Seven of 17 students completed the program, said Kathy Goodacre, CTE Foundation’s executive director.

She said they’ll provide spots for about 60 students this coming year. Students must apply by Nov. 29.

The first class is Jan. 29.

Students learn various trades including solar, plumbing, electrical and carpentry, and become certified to operate forklifts and scissor lifts. They’ll also learn how to safely operate power and hand tools.

This year’s cohort teamed with Habitat for Humanity to repair a deck for an elderly Rincon Valley couple.
