Firefighters quickly extinguished a blaze early Monday before it could spread to two nearby mobile homes at a property west of Petaluma.

The fire erupted around 4 a.m., destroying a 200-square-foot metal shed at the compound on Skillman Lane, just east of Liberty Road, Rancho Adobe Battalion Chief Herb Wandel said. Someone reported the fire after seeing a glow from across the field on Bodega Avenue.

A homeless man staying in the structure escaped injury, Wandel said.

Firefighters from Rancho Abode Fire Protection District, Cal Fire, Petaluma and Wilmar fire departments extinguished the flames within 15 minutes. Wandel said it’s unclear what caused the fire.
