A burglar who hid inside a Sebastopol grocery store Sunday night until closing but couldn’t force open a locked cash drawer, smashed a glass door to break out, according to Sebastopol police.

Police were called at 12:55 a.m. Monday to the Lucky Supermarket on Gravenstein Highway North about a vandalism.

They found a broken glass door and a damaged register. Officials believed the burglar entered the store and then hid somewhere when it closed at midnight. Surveillance video shows someone trying to break into a cash drawer, Sebastopol Sgt. Joe Furry said Monday.

Store officials told police it appeared nothing had been taken.

The video shows the man appeared to be tall and wore an orange hat, dark gray or black jeans, a black jacket and black backpack. He also had a white cloth or mask over his face and goggles to hide his features.

Police officials asked anyone with information to contact Officer Schott at 707-829-4400.
