A column of black smoke late Monday morning rose over Maria Carrillo High School in east Santa Rosa, stemming from a solar panel fire, according to a Santa Rosa fire official.

The small fire was atop one of the larger school buildings fronting Montecito Boulevard. Several people dialed 911 about 11:30 a.m. to report it.

The fire came from gear in the large solar panel system and didn’t damage the building, Santa Rosa fire Battalion Chief Mark Basque said.
