Clearlake police arrested a 47-year-old convicted sex offender March 6 on suspicion of violating his parole and multiple felony weapons counts after finding him in a church parking lot with an illegal expandable baton and a loaded handgun nearby.

Clifford Cutrell, of Clearlake, was out on state parole for sex-related offenses when police were contacted about a man acting suspicious on Lakeview Way, according to Clearlake police. An officer investigated and reported Cutrell acted nervous and said he was being chased by gunmen.

Police found no evidence Cutrell, who as a convicted felon is not lawfully allowed to possess a firearm, was being followed by someone with a gun. He was booked into Lake County Jail and faces parole violation, in addition to six felonies, including possession of a police baton, carrying a loaded firearm in public and being armed while committing a felony.
