Detectives on Monday asked the public’s help finding the getaway car used by a suspect in a deadly Sebastopol stabbing.

Jailed suspect Anthony Ibach, 18, drove away from the scene of the Saturday stabbing in a burgundy 2001 BMW 325i with custom rims and the front license plate - 4SVW467 - on the dashboard, Sonoma County sheriff’s officials said.

But when law enforcement officers found Ibach several hours later as he walked down a San Rafael street, the vehicle was not found in the area.

Ibach killed an acquaintance, 19-year-old Cory Vaughn, about 12:30 p.m. Saturday during an argument at a parking lot outside the Gravenstein Grill on Bodega Avenue east of Ragle Road, according to investigators. The incident had no ties to the business, and the pair had been at a nearby house for a party.

Sheriff officials said Ibach and Vaughn had “unresolved issues.”

“Vaughn’s friends told Vaughn that Ibach was in the parking lot next door wanting to talk to him,” according to a Sheriff’s Office news statement. “Vaughn left the party and met with Ibach, which ultimately resulted in a fight.”

Ibach “pulled out a cutting instrument and hit Vaughn several times with it,” including a deep slashing wound to his upper chest, “which ended the fight,” officials said. Multiple people witnessed the fight and friends tried to help Vaughn, but he died at the scene.

Ibach fled the scene, prompting a large-scale search involving multiple agencies and bulletins putting nearby agencies on the lookout. San Rafael police spotted Ibach about 6 p.m. walking on Francisco Boulevard, and arrested him. Ibach initially provided a false name, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s violent crimes detectives were brought in to help Sebastopol police in the investigation.

Anyone with information about the missing BMW can call Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office dispatch at 707-565-2121.
