Sinkhole temporarily shuts down Santa Rosa street

Officials say the sinkhole appeared to have been caused by an eroded, underground storm drain.|

A small but deep sinkhole opened up Monday morning on a street in northwest Santa Rosa, shutting down the roadway for at least 8 hours until it could be repaired, Santa Rosa police and fire officials said.

Drivers were asked to take alternative routes after the hole appeared on Barnes Road just north of the Dennis Lane intersection. Barnes Road connects the Coffey Park neighborhood to River Road and Highway 101. It closed around 9:30 a.m. but reopened about 4 p.m., according to news alerts.

The sinkhole was about two feet wide and six feet deep. It likely opened after someone drove over the weak spot, causing the road to collapse, said Paul Lowenthal, Santa Rosa assistant fire marshal.

The crater appeared to have been caused by an eroded, underground storm drain near the shoulder of Barnes Road, he said.
