A Sonoma Valley man who was on his way to see his girlfriend in jail joined her after officers arrested him on suspicion of drunken driving when he rolled up onto a sidewalk, the CHP said.

CHP officers were booking a suspect into Sonoma County Jail about 3:40 a.m. when they heard pounding coming from a back parking lot door. An officer and jail employees went outside to investigate and found Erick Rodriguez Tellez, 29, trying to move his pickup.

With officers watching, Tellez hit a curb and then traveled onto the sidewalk before stopping, CHP said.

The Agua Caliente man told officers he had come to ask about his girlfriend, who had been arrested earlier by Healdsburg police officers. Officers instead booked him into jail on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs and driving without a license, CHP said.
