A motorcycle rider speeding north on Highway 101 near Healdsburg Sunday crashed into the back of a car, the CHP said.

Rider Javier Carona, 26, of Santa Rosa, and passenger Tara Bowers, 27, of Cloverdale, suffered critical injuries in the collision and were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Carona was cutting through traffic lanes at a high rate of speed at about 10 a.m. near Healdsburg Avenue, when his Yamaha hit the back of a Mini Cooper, said CHP Officer Kimberly Lemons in a news release.

The Mini Cooper driver, Toan Dinh, 24, of Rohnert Park, wasn’t injured.

The crash remained under investigation Tuesday, including whether the rider was impaired. Speed appeared to be a factor, Lemons said.

Hospital conditions for Carona and Bowers weren’t available Tuesday afternoon.
