Police: Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital patient assaults workers, survives leap from second-story window

A Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital patient leaped from a second-story window Sunday afternoon after assaulting two hospital workers, but he survived the fall with only minor injuries, officials said.

The unidentified man jumped from the Montgomery Drive medical facility at about 2:50 p.m. He was involved in the physical altercation and then shattered the window in his room before leaping out and landing in a concrete area below, Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Dan Marincik said.

Vanessa DeGier, the hospital’s spokeswoman, confirmed the incident, but said she was still unclear on what transpired. The hospital was conducting its own internal investigation.

“The patient is alive and being cared for,” she said. “Right now, caring for the individual is our top concern, as is other patients’ safety.”

An eyewitness, who declined to provide his name, said the patient was in his late 40s or early 50s. He said the man screamed at a female worker and held her against a corner wall before smashing the window with an IV pole and jumping out.

The patient landed on what appeared to be a generator or electrical unit and never lost consciousness as hospital staff raced downstairs to help him, the eyewitness said. He believed the man suffered only bruises and a cut on his lower leg and was returned inside on a gurney.
