CHP: Fiery big rig crash on Highway 101 in Cotati caused by abandoned car

The CHP is still searching for the person who left the car behind after crashing into a guardrail in Cotati early Wednesday.|

An abandoned sedan in the roadway has been identified as the cause of a fiery Highway 101 collision with a UPS big rig early Wednesday morning in Cotati.

The driver of the sedan left it parked in the right lane of the northbound highway after crashing into the guardrail on the right shoulder, according to CHP Officer Steve Fricke.

It remained unclear when that crash occurred. No calls were made to 911 in the crash before the double-trailer UPS truck collided with it about 3:55 a.m., the CHP said.

The three northbound lanes of the highway were closed for about two hours Wednesday before the left lane reopened. The remaining lanes were cleared for traffic by 11:40 a.m.

CHP is still looking for the driver of the sedan.
