The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office on Monday released the name of a man struck and killed last week while standing on Highway 101, identifying him as an Ohio resident.

Nathan Brown, 31, had a last known address in Huber Heights, Ohio. He had been staying with friends in Mendocino and Humboldt counties, sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Crum said Monday.

The CHP suspects that Brown was driving north on the highway in a U-Haul pickup when he struck a car near Healdsburg about 9:10 p.m. Nov. 13 and didn’t stop. Six minutes later, Brown was struck and killed on the highway near Geyserville Avenue, where he had pulled over and gotten out of the pickup, the CHP said.

Brown had stepped into the slow lane in front of an oncoming car and was hit, the CHP said. He then was struck by a second car.

The first driver who hit him told officers that by the time she saw Brown it was too late to avoid the crash, the CHP said. The second driver told officers he didn’t realize there was someone in his lane until it was too late.
