The CHP has launched an investigation of an apparent hit-and-run involving a 68-year-old male bicycle rider from Covelo who was found dead Monday evening near his damaged bicycle on the side of a rural Mendocino County highway.

The CHP is asking for help in finding the driver and vehicle.

The name of the rider hasn’t been released because the Mendocino County coroner’s investigators continue to try to locate family members.

He was found just after 6 p.m. by a Round Valley Tribal Police officer driving on Mendocino Pass Road, also known as Highway 162. The officer spotted a damaged bicycle on the shoulder and stopped, finding the rider’s body nearby, the CHP said Tuesday. There was no one else at the scene near Short Creek Road northeast of Covelo.

The man had been riding east on a Huffy bicycle on Mendocino Pass Road when he was struck, the CHP said.

Anyone with information to help determine who hit the rider and with what type of vehicle is asked to contact CHP officers at 707-923-2155.
