ARCATA — A former veteran instructor at Humboldt State University has been arrested on child pornography charges following a months-long investigation.

Humboldt County Sheriff's Office spokesman Steve Knight said thousands of photographs and videos were found on a computer, thumb drive and hard drive taken from 64-year-old Chris Haynes' Arcata home.

The Eureka Times-Standard (http://bit.ly/1qexfgY) says Haynes spent more than two decades teaching geography at Humboldt State and received the California Geographical Society's Outstanding Educator Award in 2007.

County authorities started investigating him in June after U.S. Homeland Security agents reported that a website company saw child porn being posted on one of its servers. Knight says an Internet address where some of the posts originated were traced to Haynes.

Hayes was arrested Friday and released from jail on a $100,000 bond. A telephone call to his home was not immediately returned.
