A 9-year-old Southern California boy rescued from the water at Monastery Beach in Carmel on Tuesday has died, reports KSBW.

The Alhambra boy and his father had been playing in the surf about 12:40 p.m. when a series of waves hit them, washing the boy into the water, according to Cal Fire.

The boy's father, not a strong swimmer, reportedly wanted to rescue him but was prevented from entering the water by onlookers.

The boy struggled in the water for 20 minutes until a rescue team got to him. They performed CPR on the boy and rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
