Father disappears after rescuing son from water near Pittsburg Marina

FRESNO - Authorities are warning Californians to beware of rivers running full and cold after one of the wettest winters on record, after a weekend in which crews recovered the body of one drowning victim and were searching for another man feared drowned.

On Sunday, authorities were looking for a 52-year-old boater who disappeared the day before after rescuing his young son from the water, television station KNTV in San Jose said. The boy was treated for suspected hypothermia after Saturday's accident at the San Joaquin River's delta with the Sacramento River.

Contra Costa County sheriff's officials did not immediately return a call Sunday seeking more information.

On Saturday, search crews and a fisherman recovered the body of Neng Thao, 18, from the San Joaquin River at Fresno, the Fresno Bee newspaper reported . The teenager, who had been at a family gathering at the river, had been due to graduate from high school with honors next month.

Central California's San Joaquin River is at its highest level in years this spring, Fresno Deputy Fire Chief Todd Tuggle said. At least five people have drowned in the Central Valley's Tulare County alone since mid-April.

The National Weather Service in Sacramento warned over the weekend that melting snow has state rivers running fast and cold.
