Storm could dump 1 foot of snow in Sierra Nevada

SANTA CRUZ - Forecasters say a winter storm moving through Northern California's Sierra Nevada is expected to dump up to a foot of snow before it shifts course to the central part of the state.

National Weather Service Craig Shoemaker says Donner Pass recorded 9 inches of snow overnight, and that it could get another 3 inches by Friday afternoon.

Farther south, a high surf warning was issued for the central coast. Forecasters say beaches between Monterey and Sonoma counties could see waves up to 30 feet high.

The weather service says that some off-shore locations could see breakers approaching 55 feet.

KSBW in Salinas reports at least four surfers were plucked from the ocean off Capitola Beach on Thursday after they couldn't handle the 20-foot high waves.
