Gunman killed after shooting 2 people in Placer County
ROSEVILLE - A gunman who shot and killed a 93-year-old woman, wounded another man and then injured a police dog during a rampage was killed by deputies on a California highway, authorities said Wednesday.
Deputies responded to calls Tuesday night involving a man shooting randomly at people from inside a pickup truck in a parking lot in Newcastle, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northeast of Sacramento. Authorities reported the suspect was apparently driving and shooting in several neighborhoods and witnesses said they heard about 14 gunshots.
Mary Toste, 93, was standing at her door when she was fatally shot, authorities said.
A driver in nearby Loomis was also shot and went to a fire station for help. He was not immediately identified.
"It was a very chaotic scene," Placer County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Andrew Scott said.
Deputies caught up with the suspect near westbound Interstate 80 and Highway 65 in Roseville, where he crashed into another vehicle, Scott said. Authorities didn't immediately name the shooter.
A gunbattle erupted as deputies approached him. The suspect was shot and died at a hospital. The wounded police dog is expected to recover.
Officials closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 for more than two hours.
