Common goal

EDITOR: As a former Social Advocates for Youth board member and counselor at Ridgway High School, the students I worked with were good people who needed help to move on in their lives. We have moved one step closer to giving them the opportunity to be viable members of our community ("Young-adult housing project advances," Friday).

Your extensive reports on the controversy surrounding SAY's proposed Dream Center indicated that both proponents and opponents want a safe, secure community, but they differ on how to achieve that. It seems likely that common ground could be achieved if people on each side of the issue could sit down together and really listen for ways to work together.

There are organizations with trained peace-builders who know how to help people do that. Many of them will be available at the annual Season for Nonviolence kick-off event at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Santa Rosa's Glaser Center. The program also includes a one-hour workshop on nonviolence at 5:30 p.m.

Let us work together to build the beloved community that the Rev. Martin Luther King spoke of.
