Thumbs up: The National Park Service turns 100

In honor of the National Park Service's 100th anniversary, get out and enjoy one of California's parks for free this weekend.|

This month marks the 100th anniversary of the creation of the National Park Service, and Uncle Sam is offering all of us a gift to mark the occasion.

Beginning Thursday and through Sunday, admission will be free at the 124 national parks that typically charge entry fees or commercial tour fees. Free admission also is scheduled for Sept. 24 for National Lands Day and on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

It has been said that what a country chooses to save is what a country chooses to say about itself. So if you're looking for an inspiring weekend outing, go see what the United States says about itself.
