Thumbs up: Cloverdale no longer feeling burned by Bernie Sanders

The Bernie Sanders campaign has finally paid Cloverdale the $23,000 owed for a June rally there that more than 6,000 people.|

In a Close to Home column published Aug. 11 on these pages, Cloverdale City Manager Paul Cayler made clear that there was no confusion, no overcharging and no question about the facts. The Bernie Sanders’ campaign owed Cloverdale more than $23,000 for providing last-minute police and firefighter protection for a rally at the airport on June 3 that drew some 6,000 people.

“It was more than 100 degrees on the day of the rally. There were many medical aid calls for heat exposure,” he wrote. “The (Sanders) advance team understood the challenges. … The members of the team promised full reimbursement with a detailed invoice.”

It has taken some time, but the Sanders campaign has not only owned up to the fact that it has a debt to pay to Cloverdale, it has ponied up. The campaign has paid the city $23,014.42 for these services.

The timing was good. The payment came just as word was getting out that Sanders had bought a four-bedroom home on lakefront property in Vermont. It’s his third house. The people of Cloverdale probably would have been none too pleased.

But all accounts are now settled. Kudos to Bernie.
