Thumbs up: A record for renewable power

California continues to set new records for green energy use as the state moves toward self-imposed requirements that utilities procure a third of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020 and half by 2030.

Wind, solar and other renewable sources met 42 percent of the state's electricity demand on May 16, according to the California Independent System operator, the agency that runs the state's power grid.

At its peak, renewable energy covered 72 percent of demand statewide, with nuclear plants and thermal generation, a category covering gas-fired plants as well as steam energy, supplying most of the balance, according to Cal ISO. The previous record was set five days earlier, with a peak hour of 67 percent renewable energy. Thumbs up.
