Thumbs up: A slice of life: Windsor au fromage

Yes, it’s cheesy. But that’s the point of the tall, yellow steel sculpture that Windsor officials are planning to put at the center of a roundabout in town. It’s art. It’s whimsical. And it reflects a community that doesn’t take itself too seriously. So, who cares if it’s also a 20-foot-tall chunk of cheese appropriately titled “Slice”? Well, apparently some people do care and have been critical of the sculpture by the late Robert Ellison of Penngrove, who died in 2012. Ellison, a master at producing lively, colorful paintings and sculptures, has a number of pieces of art scattered around Sonoma County, including “Cherry Soda” in Petaluma’s Theater District and “Bar Note Bench” at the Green Music Center at Sonoma State University. In our view, the new roundabout at Old Redwood Highway and Windsor Road is a prime location for another of his works. But it may just take time for the controversy to die down. Here’s hoping this “Slice” ages well.
