Thumbs up: Habitat playhouses for local kids

Thumbs up to Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County, the nonprofit organization best known for helping people build their own homes. Habitat is pursuing a project involving another kind of house - playhouses for children. Local nonprofits, owners of Habitat homes, children of active members of the armed forces and veterans all qualify for a themed playhouse. So do children who have had a traumatic experience, such as last fall's wildfires.

Habitat Sonoma completed its first round of assembling and distributing playhouses in early July, with 19 structures given to young fire survivors. The group hopes to hold a second giveaway if a corporate sponsor “steps up to the plate,” Wayne Kleefeld, general manager of Habitat's ReStore center in Santa Rosa, told the Sonoma Index-Tribune. Those interested in a playhouse for a child or an organization can apply at habitatsoco.org/restore/receive-a-playhouse.
