Health fairs

Many Sonoma County communities are holding health fairs during Hispanic Heritage Month.

The fairs are part of The Health Initiative of the Americas’ Binational Health Week, an effort by state and federal agencies, community-based organizations and volunteers to improve the health of the underserved Latino population in the United States, particularly of migrant workers.

The fairs are a venue for health promotion and education activities that include insurance referrals, workshops and medical screenings. Government officials from at least eight Latin American countries, the United States and Canada participate.

Last year, 60,000 health screenings and services were offered at 1,800 health conferences, fairs, classes and sports events attended by 325,600 people - two thirds of them women.

The Health Initiative of the Americas is a program of the University of California at Berkeley School of Public Health.
