The Santa Rosa JC football team presented coach Lenny Wagner with the birthday present he wanted most Saturday night as the Bear Cubs upended De Anza, 41-10, in a Big 6 Conference game at Bailey Field.

Coming off two losses, Santa Rosa (6-2, 1-2) needed a positive outcome and took control from the start. It was 28-3 at halftime and 41-3 after three quarters.

“The guys were ready to play,” said Wagner, who was enjoying his 45th birthday. “They wanted to put those losses behind them.

“Most of the starters came out of the game in the third quarter, and we put in a lot of guys that hadn’t gotten much playing time.”

Two former North Bay League stars - Logan Francavilla (Montgomery) and Christian McAlvain (Windsor) - got the Bear Cubs’ offense percolating. Francavilla scored the game’s first touchdown on a 1-yard run, and that was followed shortly by McAlvain’s 2-yard score.

In the second quarter, McAlvain threw a pair of TD passes. The first was a 2-yarder to Drew Jackson, the second covering 41 yards to Khiry Hayes.

The Bear Cubs, ranked No. 6 in Northern California, will be home again next Saturday at?5 p.m. against Foothill.
