Warriors' Stephen Curry's pain is in heel, not ankle

All-Star guard questionable for game Tuesday vs. Wizards|

WASHINGTON - No, Stephen Curry says, his twice-surgically repaired right ankle is “not really” where he is feeling discomfort.

The Warriors guard said the soreness that caused him to miss Sunday’s 104-98 loss at Indiana came from his heel.

“So it’s not anything I’ve had before,” Curry said Monday. “So it’s not anything I had surgery on or a normal ankle sprain. It’s different.”

Curry was listed as questionable to play in today’s game at Washington after participating fully in the team’s light practice. He said he was feeling better after originally stepping on another player’s foot against San Antonio.

It had been 15 months before the Indiana game that Curry last missed a game because of injury. He last underwent right ankle surgery on April 25, 2012.

Still, there is uneasiness when Curry even hears the word “ankle.”

“It makes me feel better knowing it’s not that same situation,” Curry said. “I’m two years removed from all that stuff. I’ve played 78-plus games the last two years, so I think we’re hopefully past that and blessed to be getting back healthy so I don’t have to worry about that.”

Warriors coach Steve Kerr took no chances at Indiana and sat Curry, who said he felt discomfort while doing simple moves. Curry, the team’s leading scorer and a league MVP candidate, agreed after testing the foot during warmups.

“If you have to somewhat favor it, then it doesn’t make any sense to play, especially on the front end of an injury,” Curry said, adding he looked forward to being 100 percent healthy the rest of the season.

The 43-10 Warriors continue to have the league’s best record, and that was a factor in Kerr’s decision not to play Curry at Indiana. Even after the loss and a point guard matchup against Washington’s John Wall forthcoming, Kerr will continue to be cautious with Curry.

“I haven’t been around long enough to have been through the absences, but obviously we’re going to be careful regardless of what the injury is with all of our guys,” Kerr said.

The Warriors are scheduled to tour the Pentagon and visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Wednesday when the team is not practicing.

“When you’re in DC, you’ve got to take advantage of the opportunity,” Kerr said.
