Giants add 3, A's get 2 in All-Star Game

Three of Buster Posey’s teammates will join him on the National League All-Star team and the Oakland A’s learned they’ll have two representatives in Cincinnati on July 14.

The All-Star Game reserves and pitchers were announced by MLB on Monday.

Posey, who was voted the starting catcher in lineups announced Sunday, will have pitcher Madison Bumgarner, shortstop Brandon Crawford and second baseman Joe Panik with him on the NL. On the AL side, the A’s will have pitcher Sonny Gray and his battery mate, catcher Stephen Vogt.

This marks the third consecutive selection for Bumgarner, who has not yet registered an appearance on the field in an All-Star Game. He would seem set up do break that streak this year. His final start before the break is Friday, which would allow him three days’ rest - plenty, considering All-Star outings rarely last more than an inning or two.

Crawford becomes the first Giants shortstop to make the All-Star squad since Rich Aurilia in 2001. Crawford’s middle infield partner Panik, though having cooled lately, entered Monday’s game still ranked fourth in the league in hits (93) and tied for sixth in the league in doubles (21). He becomes the first Giants second baseman to make the All-Star team since Marco Scutaro in 2013.

Panik, 24, who started last season at Double-A ball, has 25 multi-hit games this season.

Panik won’t be the only youngster introduced at Great American Ballpark. The National League reserves announced Monday included Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, who made his major-league debut less than three months ago, and Joc Pederson, the Dodgers’ rookie center fielder.

Two more members of the Kansas City Royals were added - pitchers Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera - to bring their MLB-leading number of representatives to six. The St. Louis Cardinals, with five, top the NL.

NOTES

Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen, added to the roster as a reserve, will start in place of injured Giancarlo Stanton.

Albert Pujols of the Angels will start at first base in the AL in place of injured Miguel Cabrera.
